On May 3 my buddy WoodCanoe and I drove up from Cedar Run to visit Sandfly at the Big Meadows Fly Shop. Sandfly was incredibly generous and knowledgeable. He gave us some directions and we drove up to Four Mile Run. We hiked in and then hiked downstream. Our goal was to hike below the falls and fish up. That is until we saw the falls. There is no way my 64 year old butt was going to make it down the falls and back up again, so we started fishing upstream from Four Mile Falls. The weather was cool (low 50's) the water 48 degrees, clear and high. We were fishing a dry - dropper combination that Sandfly showed us. We each took 3-4 brookeis. Woodcanoe took the stud of the run with a 6 incher! Pictures to follow in a day or two. Our thanks to Sandfly for all of his hospitality and help!!

Nice report. That is a very scenic area. The falls are awesome.

Chaz and I hiked up around that falls.

I'm not recommending anyone do that. But I am bragging a little. 🙂

It's brutal and dangerous, and I wouldn't try it again. Unless someone knows of any easier route up around it.

How did you get below the falls?

We didn't go down past the falls. We hiked up past the falls.

But I won't do it again and don't recommend hiking past the falls in either the up or down direction.

It's too dangerous, and brutally difficult.

The slopes are very steep on both sides. Rather than hiking up right at the falls, we walked downstream a ways (probably 100 yards or so) then climbed up the hillslope on the north (right side facing upstream) until we were about level with brink of the falls, then scrambled sidehill on the steep slope through deadfalls and brush. And everything was wet because it was raining, so the footing was slippery.

But, I think that this was a mistake, taking risks without any need to.

Just walk down the Turkey Path from Colton Point SP, fish up 4 Mile Run to the falls, then backtrack.

Don't try to go past the falls.

I've fished past the falls. But like TB, we hiked in from the mouth and fished UP past there, we did not go down the falls.

Pretty good stream if I recall.

Facing downstream go down the falls on the left, and be careful!!!
