Fly Clips

I've always scoffed at using clips to attach my fly, but because of the weather I switched from "bluelining" to "brownlining" with Fredrick to fish for snakeheads.

Anyway, he used clips (pic below) to attach flies making it easy to change flies without constantly clipping off and retying.

The clips worked great and did not interfere with the fly or sink topwater flies.

It also allows freedom of movement for the fly like a loop does, which may make a difference.

I wouldn't use them for smaller trout flies, but they should work well trout streamers and for any bass flies or saltwater flies.

They come in three sizes, I bought the 13mm / 25lb clips for my fishing, but they come in heavier sizes for saltwater or bigger freshwater fish like muskies.

I now seem a lot more willing to change flies without tying knots and shortening my tippet with each fly change.

Funny you should mention these. I literally just ordered a batch of 15# and 25# clips the other evening. Like you, I probably won't use them for trout, but for bass and panfish I will definitely be using them on both fly rods and with spinning and conventional gear.

i tried that style but found i liked these better. been using them smallie fishing for the last two seasons.

I like this style. I use them for trout when I can find the smallest size.

i've tried those also. i found them less reliable after multiple fly changes and have had them open up.

Im not a fan of the TA style clip and prefer the Rio clips that look like the Mustad clip for smaller flies and a standard snap for bigger flies. I started messing around with them a few years ago as my bifocals and hat magnifiers started fighting each other for dominance. Don’t use them 100% of the time but nice to have around.
