Time Fished: 1015am - 315pm
Weather Conditions: Raining, heavy at times, 63 degrees dropping to 58
Water Conditions: Clear, 57 degrees, 150 cfs
Insects: BWO
I drove over the mountain from Kettle in a light rain and as soon as I reached the upper Sinnemahoning State Park sign it turned to total downpour. I passed the large deep hole along the highway (since there was a car parked there) and I parked along a riffle about halfway down. BWOs were hatching in decent numbers. I didn’t see any rises but it was raining really hard. I made one pass with a streamer and had no strikes. The water was too shallow so I drove back upstream to the big hole, crossed the creek and no one was fishing, despite the car being parked there.
I made 3 streamer passes during the rain, changing flies each time and I caught 6 (one small rainbow and 5 thick browns in the 13-16” range. Really nice fish. Some fish rose during the rain as BWOs hatched but fewer than what I saw downstream.
At 130 and rain quit so I switched to dries. Caught first fish I casted to and lost the second I casted to. My fly was now a little wet despite my best efforts to dry it and it didn’t work as well. I had several misses and then got a few more browns. When the rising in the pool slowed down about 230pm I moved up to fish the riffle with a dry and took 2 there just blind casting. Then it started to rain heavy again so I left.
I spoke to another fisherman who had caught about 60 the previous day. Apparently there were a number cascading hatches that kept the fish active for several hours until the spinnerfall came.
I ended up catching 9 browns and 2 rainbows. These fish are very nice and I know there are even bigger fish in this stretch. The 7-8 hefty Palominos are easy to observe and the Keystone Select fish are also there.
