Time Fished: Noon - 405pm
Water Conditions: 58 degrees, 283 cfs, mostly clear with only a slight tint of green
Weather Conditions: 67 degrees, Cloudy at the start but by the end it was bright sun
Insects: hatching yellow stoneflies, Caddis, March Browns, midges, some orange bodied mayflies and a few other mayflies that I couldn’t confirm. The hatching slowed down considerably when the sun came out full time.
I fished 2 locations on the DHALO.
First spot was a shallow riffle that held some trout. At the truck I had rigged a wet fly over a nymph, so just started down through the riffle. I got hits immediately but the hook up rate wasn’t ideal. After about a half hour (covering some productive water but other times not) I began to see more rises. That triggered me to switchover to a dry. I had caught 2 trout (brown/Rainbow) on the wet and a brown that ate the nymph.
There were many flies to choose from based on what was in the air. It took a couple fly changes but most of the trout wanted a the tan caddis. A few refused it. I landed more 3 trout. Although I was in good shape, there was a better location with more fish just below me that never opened up. So I headed to another pool that I felt would be available around 2pm.
The last 2 guys were leaving that pool as I arrived. One guy said the fishing was best before they switched to dries. So I rigged up a streamer and went to the hole. After a while I had only a couple strikes on the streamer in 100 yards but I got to a point where I was seeing more and more rises. I switched to a dry fly and it took a couple fly changes to find the right one. Eighty percent took the fly on the first cast. Twenty percent refused and didn’t come back. Since the sun was out, hatching slowed down but if I saw a rise it usually took it. I had to get home so I wrapped it up the dry fly action with 8 more rainbows at this last stop.
I had left Kettle Creek to swing by First Fork and I took Trout Run road. It drops you right above the start of the DHALO. I have good luck at seeing interesting things on that ride. Today it was 3 woodcock doing their mating dance in the road with no worry about a big truck approaching. I watched them for a few minutes and they finally got safely in the woods.
The only insect I captured on First Fork was a Black Caddis.
