Always happy to get back up to Potter County to fish and enjoy the mountains. It had been a while since my last time up to the Burned Out Camp.

I was up for the weekend and only got a little time in on the water Friday night. I spent a little too much time taking pictures and looking for some nearby elk. The evening was overcast with some nearby storms.

Saturday morning I got a late start by the pipeline. Bright sunny morning with air temps in the lower 60's. Overall not a lot of rain recently and the water was a little low running at about 140 CFS. The insects and fish weren’t very active.

The evening turned out to be a lot more fun. Water temps were pushing close to 70. The air was in the mid 70's with continued clear skies.

Fish were sporadically rising and was really hard to figure what the insects were doing. Seemed like a little bit of everything coming off and on the water: sulphur, BWO, spinners, caddis and more. I ended changing my flies quite a bit and would catch a couple on whatever I put on. Caddis turned out to be the most productive and closed the evening with rusty spinner. Not a real big spinner fall.

After being attacked in the water by a porcupine I had to stop at the Wharton to make sure I was okay. Ventured on later that night and tried to get a picture of the Milky Way just off in the SE horizon. Not easily seen by the naked eye. Hard to capture with the camera, but got a little of it.

Have never seen a porcupine in - or even near - water.
That seems pretty odd to me
Hope you didn't get stuck with any quills

Were you seeing elk along the First Fork? Are there many in that area now?

I used to fish in the First Fork drainage a fair bit in the 1990s, and never saw an elk there.

The porcupine just really surprised me. I heard something splashing behind me and saw something in the water. Figured it was a beaver, but did double take as crossed the stream about four feet away.

I saw two elk near the road. I was told there were five had been seen the day before.

Troutbert,
I've seen Elk up to about 15 miles north of the intersection 872 & 120. We have a cabin near Prouty that I get up to a few times a year and have often seen them in the lower end of the First Fork. Saw a nice bull wakling in the stream last fall. Not sure where Dave saw his but they are certainly around.

I'm curious whether Elk get hit by cars and how angry this makes the insurance companies.

Great report and photos! Thanks for sharing.

Troutbert -

I spent a little time at Kettle Creek in april.
And there were a group of about 20 elk hanging around Leidy bridge both days I was there

Real nice report and photos, Dave. Certainly no doubt on how it got the name "God's Country". Wish I could spend a bit more time up in that area.

We saw 3 bulls together along the delayed harvest section up there a few weeks ago.

I have seen the damage they do when hit. One turned the front end of a 3500 Chevy into an accordion. The front wheels were under the front doors.
