Fished mid and upper stretches of the fly project near Wharton today from 2 till 5 when a big black cloud chased me off. I was on lower stretches of the stream yesterday and one day last week. Last week the water was down but cold and there was a good hatch of Hendricksons in the afternoon but no risers so swung some wets, hendrickson wets, lead wings, no dice. Yesterday high water and saw very few Hendricksons but really a lot of tiny caddis and small stones. Again no risers, so more wets with same results.
Today the stream is still high and fast but clear, 2-3 feet of visibility, about 500 cfs at Wharton. Air temp got up to 75 and the water finally warmed up to 52. This AM was sunny but clouded over by the time I started. I was surprised not many bugs in the air today, mostly just small stones. Might have been some BWOs but I never saw them on the water. Didn't see any Hendricksons on the water or in the air today. But I did see one or two rises so tied on a #12 Hendrickson dry and fished the slower water near shore. I guess the fish were looking up 🙂 I was fishing mostly downstream and had trouble hooking fish and brought in I believe 6 of the 12-15 fish that hit. All rainbows 12-13 inches, all looked kinda rough but fought well tho not many jumps. The last one I hooked out in the fast current across the stream, he felt really strong but was maybe 14" but was thick and had great color, maybe was a holdover?
Not many fishermen today and most were gone by 3 PM. I didn't see anyone else fishing dries. I hope they don't get much rain in that watershed, the Fork was about the only one of my usual streams that was fishable.
