Falling Springs, Franklin County, 7/28/11

It's been a really god run as of late. I was out on 7/27 and caught 5 including a very pretty 20 inch bow. I caught 6 on 7/28 including a scrappy 15 inch bow. Yesterday was a strange one. I caught 2 browns and missed about 10 or so. I was a little slow on the draw yesterday when they came to the surface. They loved my ant pattern but the takes were really subtle. Today I landed another 5. All week I've had a lot of success on caddis larva, size 18 ants, and perhaps the most awesone fly I have ever made, a size 18 caddis/hopper. One brown I caught today just hung around right by the bank in front of me after I released it and didn't care that I was there. All of a sudden, a shadow went over me so I looked up and saw a heron. That got the little brown's attention and it took off for deeper water. This is the first year I've really fished more drys than nymphs and I'm starting to think that caddis is the way to go. This is strictly my opinion but I say screw the mayflys.(naturally I'll always have a few on me just in case) One thing that did intrigue me today was a brown of decent size. That darn thing would give chase every time I ran my fly by him and at one point he even had his mouth open to suck it down only to say nope. It was fun watching him and it left me wondering what he didn't like about it that fly that everything else I caught did. I mean that thing would go a long way just to turn away. I'd like to interview that damn trout and ask it "so what would you like to see in a fly"?

Becker and I fished it 7/29. Both caught a good mix of browns and bows. I don't think either of us ever had a dry on. I had fished it a few days before and found some great sculpinating areas with chasing fish. I tied up different patterns and we got a hell of a lot of chases and I missed a couple. I think all of our fish came on a fly that RowJimmy told me about. Very complex. Hook + brown spike dubbing + bead. Winner.

Nice...I hit FSB today, 08/09/11 for about and hour, because I was in Chambersburg for a TV repair. The stream is soooooo beautiful during the summer months with the clear water and vegetation. There were hoppers everywhere in the upper section, and I ended up catching three nice wild trout, one little bow and two browns. One of the browns was a really fat 18incher, that inspected my hopper (revealing its lye) then took a small stream stripped next to it's undercut. Great trip for an hour!!!!!!!!!!!

Neat! I was there yesterday although I didn't fish. I was collecting grasshoppers in the Greenway Meadow for a study I was doing. I'll write up a report on the hoppers soon (unfortunately most of my photos did not turn out).
