Based on my experience at the upper LeTort a couple of weeks ago, I'm starting to think that the small PA spring creeks are a really good place to learn to get good at bow-and-arrow casting. Not that I caught anything there, but at least I managed a few casts to targets and some usable drifts that I wasn't getting any other way.
I've started to see the potential of the bow-and-arrow cast, which I've hardly ever used before. If you're using a rod longer than 7', it's a lot easier if you hold the rod above the grip. Although it's much easier if you're using a rod that actually is 7' or less. It definitely takes some getting used to, since it bears no resemblance at all to conventional fly rod casting.
It isn't so much that the fish are especially smart on those spring creeks. It's that they're often so well-guarded, by the stream obstacles. It's like you have multiple alarm systems to crack.

I think you're right, the fish aren't any smarter, its just a really tough environment.
Plus those streams are chock full of real food. I mean, those fish sit and gorge all freaking day on cress bugs, scuds, etc. Fatties.

The fish in there hate most people... If you think you have the Letort and Big Spring mastered, go to FSB and they'll knock you back a peg or two.

I live very close to FSB. I've fished there probably 5-7 times and have been skunked every time. My first visit was the closest I got to catching anything. I might have set a hook for a few seconds! I've noticed that some days the trout are visible, some days it looks and fishes like its barren. I've never even seen a trout rise there. You can drift a fly with perfect presentation in all the best lies, over and over again, and nothing happens. It will drive you mad! I'll be going back when the it gets too warm for freestone fishing.
I've found that once you find a fishy looking lie, you need to hunker down along the bank and watch for a bit. Once things settle, the fish start to reveal themselves to differing extents.
My successful attempts have almost all been with my butt on the bank and or behind cover. And learn to cast and hook set across your chest too. Too many obstructions to back cast over the ground behind you.
