I had a couple of hours to burn this afternoon, so I decided to pay Falling Springs Branch and visit. I arrived at about noon to cold temps (upper 30s) that gradually got warmer as the sun came out. I did not get a stream temperature, but I would say that it was in the mid to low 50s.
I saw a decent midge hatch coming off throughout the warmest part of the day, but I did not see any risers. The water was flowing pretty good, but gin clear. I took a couple fish on small streamer and missed a few more. I only saw one other fisherman all day and the guy was keeping everything he caught in the Heritage section (reference bottom photo). 🙂 Overall, it was just nice to get back on the water, and I got to see an amazing sunset.

Yeah, it was hard not to notice that sunset - wow.
Nice pics and some good medicine for the cabin fever out there.

Just to be clear, he was harvesting trout from the Heritage section?

I'm assuming you missed the lower photo. 3wt was referring to a great blue heron.

That's not good, more importantly it's illegal..Mike Heck is good about getting on those guys..He's something of a river keeper on FS..Did you see what kind of car he was driving?
 
Heard you were out fishing. I know you ran into some of the Falling Spring Greenway guys. We had our meeting last night and some great things are going to be happening this year!
Wanted to get out, but had to get more of my book and flies ready for Somerset next weekend. May go out this afternoon.
And the guy taking the trout was a blue heron not a fisherman!

Mea culpa. I have glasses but father time seems indifferent to them.

That rainbow is in great shape--little football.
 
Great pics!

Neat pattern on the wild brown, great lookin fish. Rainbows always look great. Pretty sure #3 is a stocker.

That is a spectacular sunset. Sounds like a great day on the water.
 
I'm heading to C-burg tomorrow for the memorial service of a high school friend that passed away last week. Forty-six is too young to die. I hope to have a little time to scout around Falling Springs, even if I can't wet a line.

Nice pic's. I hope to spend more time back home this year. I never appreciated the Falling Springs when I was growing up. I would love to turn back time.
 
Sorry about the sarcasm regarding the blue heron. It was pretty amazing watching him stalk his prey and he let me get fairly close as well. Picture number three was definately a stocker, although I am not certain whether he made his way upstream from the stocked water or he escaped the hatchery behind Skelley's property. I took him behind the funeral home.
 
Brown made it upstream. The hatchery is empty. It was shut down very early last year. The damn at Skelly's has also been opened. The boards were pulled last spring.

Not at all..like the "Kid" said some of us are blind as a bat..Heron's got to eat..
 
On the subject of the Skelly property, any chance it might be opened again soon?

As I stated above some very good things going to happen to the stream this year and coming year. Most all the topics I can't dwell into or discuss due to the matters at hand. I can say that plans are in hand to work and open another reach of stream just below the headwaters. Mr. Powers property will be open and restored this year. We here at the FSTU and FSG are working very hard to ensure future generations will be able to fish the Falling Springs.

I really like that first brown, the way it looks. I catch rainbows just like that one on another little limestoner.

When I was a kid my grandfather would take me for drives along the river on a dirt road and we would count blue herons. We would see one maybe two of them. Nowadays I see at least a half dozen or more on the same stretch, plus those cormorants are everywhere as well. Must be nice to be protected like the eagle.

That is Awesome news. I got permission once to be upthere. Plenty of fish up that far too 🙂
