Falling Spring Branch, Franklin County, 8/23/11

Fished Falling Spring this morning at Briar Road and the Quarry Meadow. Air temp in the 60's-70's, water temp 50's. Caught 3 bows and 1 brown, all on Letort Hoppers. It was a bluebird sky, and all fish were caught early before the sun got high. The fields in the upper section of the creek were loaded with hoppers and crickets. Overall great day to be out!

Hoppers are fun.....I drove through a field of high grass the other day and had about 50 on my car hood and windshield. It was like the arrow scene in Apocolypse Now. I was very close to the Breeches and daydreamed a little.

Nice report and great pictures. I was just getting ready to post a stream report on Falling Springs from yesterday 08/24/2011, but it would have closely mirrored your observations. I fished last evening from 5pm-8:30pm. I noticed plenty of hoppers and some micro caddis flickering about. I started by throwing a hopper around and I only got a small rainbow to respond, unfortunatly, I pulled the hook too early on him. I switched over to a small sculpin pattern as the sun went down, and I took a nice 13 inch rainbow, followed by a very "letorty looking" 16 inch brown. Overall, it was a great evening to be out.

I love the pattern of that brown! For some reason, I just like the sparse spotting pattern - and you're right, it does look like a Letort strain. Nice!

that is a VERY pretty brown. i would like to visit one of the big 3 spring creeks in cumberland valley but honestly dont think im a good enough fly fisherman. ill try my hand at it one of these days though.

Even if you don't catch anything, it's worth the visit. I feel lucky to live close to these streams, and they are definitely worth the drive. Don't worry about not catching anything - I know a lot of people (including me) that get spanked regularly by these streams, yet we keep coming back. Just being on them is an experience. If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the other lesser fished limestoners in the area. Many are just as beautiful with less pressure.

If you are accepting that you are going to get your teeth kicked in, Letort is by far the most scenic imo. If you want a chance at catching a fish, then Big Spring or Falling Spring will be easier. I don't think most are going to give up the lesser fished because . . . well . . . it defeats lesser fished. LOL.

How about Green Spring? Nobody fishes that and it's right near Big Spring.

If you really are interested in checking out the cumberland valley streams, there are a lot of good books that have stream info (like books by Armstrong and Landis). Also dig around on this site and others. The info is out there, go get it!

In my opinion, the definitive work on CV limestone streams is Mike Hecks Spring Creek Strategies. This is more regarding the "how to" versus "where is".
