I made a quick trip to falling spring this afternoon, fishing from 1:00 to around 2:30. Air temps in the lower 90s with mostly sunny skies, but ice cold water as usual. Nothing was visibly hatching all though I did see a few fish rising here and there.
I fished the upper part of the fly only area in places where I could walk the bank because I didn’t feel like wading. I just wanted to check it out and see how the weed growth was coming along and how the water level was, any fish catches would be an added bonus. I’m happy to report that while the weeds are still sparse compared to last year, the stream doesn’t appear dangerously low like it did this spring. The flows are still not great, but all the rain must have helped.
I started at springview drive and fished downstream, casting a tiny olive colored jig streamer in all the shaded pockets and pools. I had several fish chase and one strike, but nothing landed. I then drove slightly farther downstream and fished underneath a bridge. On three consecutive casts, a rainbow in the 9-10 inch range chased it out and struck, but I failed to hook it. Then on the fourth cast I let it drift farther under the bridge, and when I went to pop it off the bottom, I just felt weight. I set the hook on a really nice brown trout, which I landed and quickly released. Overall a good afternoon, and It was great to see fish everywhere in sections that just a month or two ago were too shallow to even fish.
The streamer that produced all my strikes, I’m not sure what I was going for when I tied it but the fish seem to like it. I guess it could pass for a sculpin or a small crawfish
