In that case, you owe it to yourself to give the driftless streams a shot. They're all like that, more or less, and they're loaded with fish.

It's been on my list of destinations for quite a while. I really like small spring-influenced streams. They are my absolute favorite.

Are the plantings some sort of stream improvement?
A few pics from around the "area"...
1st is from a spring creek near Westfield, WI on Labor Day weekend. Last fish I caught for the season (as far as I know) from there. 2nd pic was from a backpacking trip...Carp River Inlet in the Porcupine Mtns, late September. 3rd pic is the falls on Yellow Creek, Columbus Day weekend. No fishing for me through the end of the year, unfortunately.

Plenty. Most landowners even allow fishing, in the cases where a stream flows on private. Most work with the DNR, and many places even have stiles to cross livestock fences in places. There is usually signage welcoming fisherman. This not universally true, but I would say 3/4 of time, public access is a given. Every place I have posted about I was fishing public water, or private water graciously opened to the public by the landowner.

I had no access problems in the 20-30 four day trips I took to fish Iowa when we lived in the Midwest. But there was also no shortage of water that I would have liked to fish, but did not bother as fishing access to privately owned lands requires (or did require back then 2001-2015) written landowner permission to enter. But, to Joe's point, there is lots and lots of excellent wild trout water on public lands, under DNR easement or posted as open by cooperating landowners.
The access situation in Wisconsin is considerably better though. In addition to an abundance or either publicly owned or DNR lease/easement arrangements, Wisconsin is also a "wet foot" state where all stream beds regardless of how small are considered public. This basically means there is no stream in Wisconsin you cannot access/fish so long as you remain in the stream bed. Most folks don't push the envelope on this stuff out there though which is probably why the privilege still exists.

Same. I had a close friend in Minneapolis for a few years, but I missed using them as a jump off point for the driftless. Been looking for a reason to buy that plane ticket...
My aunt lives in Minneapolis.... For now. She's lived there for 30 years or so, but she's talking about moving.

Since you asked! It was about as good as it gets. 7 eats, 3 to hand, although they weren't very big. First time targeting them from a paddleboard - I was getting into an area that gets very little pressure.
Also remembered this sunset photo when I went back to grab the pike photos. I got drenched out there lol.

My experiencecwas with Wisconsin where the stream access laws are very favorable to fisherman and there are many public access areas and easements that make access very easy and worry free.

Sny Magill creek here in Iowa yesterday; lots of roll casting bankside to avoid walking thru gravel beds as the spawn gets underway here. Prob should give the fish a break to focus on hunting. Snapped a quick pick of a 'stick of butter'; fished soft hackles on a tandem rig down & across: beadhead partridge & olive on point, partridge & olive wet on the dropper.
