Elk Creek (Erie County)

Fished upper elk upstream from the 79 hole the evening of the 7th. Lost one on a #16 grey/red hare's ear. Not a lot of fish to be seen in the clear water, but not a lot of people either. Sunday morning the water level seemed to have dropped, tried Skinner Rd. and downstream until the sun came up - nothing, but more fish in this section. Laying in the flats, fast water and holes. Very easy to spook of course.

I did catch a 3.5 -4" smolt, which I thought was odd, since any smolts the PAFBC stocks are usually bigger to start and would be much bigger by now I assume. I thought maybe this could have been a stream bred steelie? Any thoughts? Its colors were very bright, not like the occasional smolt I catch in March.

Did not see, or hear of, a fish landed by anyone I saw.

Some smolts were stocked in the fall. I talked with a few local residents and they mentioned smolts had been syocked. There was a thread on Fisherie about this. Some of the folks on that site would prefer to believe Elk was suddenly producing numerous wild smolts....

Thanks Kev. I hadn't heard of those stockings. I try to stay away from Fisherie.com, as reading too many posts there usually puts me in a bad mood.
