Elk Creek, Erie County PA 12/5/2009

Right now its 13 degrees at my house and winds are gusting about 40 mph and there are some whiteouts / went to pickup my grandson and it was getting bad

Well the stream levels are back to where they were a few days ago. It might just be a problem getting to the streams. I bet there won't be too many other crazies on the stream if I do go tomorrow lol.

Edit: There's people out fishing today!

depends on which streams you go to ! i would say it will be good tomorrow , less fish means less people ,. west side more fish , more people !

Everyone wussed out on me. Backup plan is just to head to a local stream for a few hours tomorrow. Maybe next week.

Hey flipnfly, it was great to fish with you again. If the weather isn't too bad maybe we can get back up there in a few weeks. Ryguyfi said he may be done for the season but we will see.

if it doesnt freeze im always game....

Ry is never done guys. . . we all know that.

He always says he is quitting. He can't do it though.

I have been trying to get him to a S.A. Steelheads Anonymous meeting.

Glad to hear you guys got on some fish though.

I may be done because of needing some time at home, plus the streams will start to freeze over here fairly soon.

What these guys didn't tell you is that if it wasn't for me, they wouldn't have had too many fish to put flies over. We parked at Folly's and found very few fish where they usually held. I counted about a half dozen from the "honey hole" to above the 98 bridge. There must have been 40 in that area a month or so ago. I decided to walk a ways upstream and told the guys they can meet up there. I caught one nice fish early that I spotted and he took a swung nymph soon afterwards. Seemed to be the key recently.

I walked a ways upstream and saw 2 fish cruising under an overhung branch in the water. I knew if I could even get a fly under there, that a hooked fish would most likely tangle up. I then took the next best approach. I waded across the stream, grabbed a stick, and "pushed" the fish upstrem a bit to be able to present a fly in an easier spot. To my surprise ;-) there was about 20 fish under that bunch of branches. Soon after I fished over them for a while the other guys in my group met up with me. We had a ball fishing over these fish and then pushing them back up into the nice run about every 20-30 minutes. Rich and Flipnfly caught 2 nice fish pushing 30 inches and 10lbs. I managed a few good hookups but no fair hooked fish landed. We had many foul hooks due to the large amount of fish, and the low clear water. We had a good day and got lucky in finding the fish. This year seems to be pretty bad in the amount of fish in the streams. I don't recall in years past having issues in finding fish. I like to fish in the spring after the thaw, but there were so few fish left it might not be worth it. We'll see when that time comes up... but as MillerTime said it's tough to get me away from those steelies!!

Wooo. Nice.

I went with this approach a few weeks ago 75% of the way down to the cable down stream of folley's no takers but it was fun moving the fish around!

I think I am done heading up there as well for a bit.

I am going to focus on tying some flys for spring.

Why?

the fish were in a hard spot, so he "herded" them up stream with a stick....

instead of fishing and adapting to a hard lie... he spooked them to an easier spot

quite an accomplishment...
must have been real proud of those force-feeds

Ok, so you prefer to fish more "technical" situations. Others might prefer catching fish.

Congratulations.

Why should others be held to the same standard?

Absurd.

Hey! They were on the cart path...read the rules...shankapotamus!

why not snagg it?
why not frog gig it?
why not just net it?
why not bank slit it?
why not beach it, hold it still with studded boots, and then kick it back into the stream for a release?
