My kinda Christmas Eve
Fished Elk Creek at the Rick Road Access. Checked it out down at Rte 20 Bridge, 1.5’ visibility but it was blowing pretty good and had come down over a foot since the snow stopped the night before, based on the snow line on the bank. So I headed upstream.
One guy at Rick Road fishing a noodle, he packed it in when I arrived at 9:00 am. Got the first fish in the tailout of the bridge run/hole. Bites came slow but steady all day. Fished a two fly rig with my signature 1” glowbug as a point fly and as a dropper, started with a Viagara fly. Got 2 on that. I like the big globug in white or chartreuse in murky water to get the fish’s attention then they usually hit the trailer. After a bit of a dry spell using dulls and darks to follow I switched to a red egg sucking weenie, another of my creations from 20 yrs ago. Hooked two on that. One jack and a hen, I touched three of those four fish.
I had that hole to myself for two hours til a filthy pinner showed up with his buddy. We traded spots a time or two before I got bored there and decided to hike a bit. I fished my way upstream about a half mile and came upon plenty of nice water to fish with the color but found no fish until I come across a decent run that looked like a perfect spot to swing wets so after junk fly chucking my way up through I put on a couple of my steelhead wet creations from 10-15 years ago. The point Fly was kind of a copperjohn in the back with a chartreuse egg abdomen and globug material wing. The trailer was a royal coachman wet with unconventional colored tail and wing. Picked up two fish on the coachmen before losing it in a tree. Brought one of those close enough to wack it with the net before it popped off. Switched to a craft fur black nose dace for my trailer with the clearing water. Still very green in the deeper areas tho.
Decided to continue downstream swinging all that purdy water. Found more fish in a shallow pocket water run. (2.5’) both of which popped off with a head shake downstream on a high rod tip. Rookie mistakes. Note to self, when swinging flies to Steelies, when you set the hook, do it to the side as not to pull the hook out...
Had no more action all the way to the bridge. Two guys there, one had a fish on and I was able to move into my old spot. Kept swinging and tusseled with another before calling it quits around 3:45 pm.
Thankful for a productive day and the nudge from David for which I may have bagged the whole thing after an alternator fiasco on the turnpike. Thanks for reminding me to press on and give the thumb to the nose of being 55 and cautious.
All old fish up high, might be some fresh ones below if there were still any in the lake. Looks like Erie will lock up quick this week. Glad I caught a break.
