Elk Creek, Erie County, 10/16/2010

Thanks for the update.
I'll be up the 25th, I hope it's doing well then.

Thanks for the info on fly color guys, any takes on streamers?

TUNA,

I fished a tandem with a black or purple bugger for a long time, mostly dead drifted but with a swing at the end of each drift. I also fished an orange bunny leach for a while and a black bunny leach. No takes at all on the streamers. It varies from trip to trip. My September trip I got two on streamers.

I kept getting fish to follow and take long looks at my streamers, but no hook-ups, when I went a few weeks ago. I tried swinging them too, but to no avail. I'll just have to keep at it. I did decide, at one point, to try fishing a dry. I used a downstream drift swung through the current, with a size 14 CDC and EH Caddis (I tried to create a wake on some drifts, and others just a natural dead drift). I had a few fish look up, but only one tried to take it. Of course I missed it, probably because I couldn't believe that a Steelie would hit on top. I think the hit was more out of aggravation on his behalf. I probably drifted the Caddis over him at least 50 times before he tried to take.

How do you think the rains on 25th and 26th will affect fishing on Elk Creek?

forecast is for 4 hundredths of and inch... .004 doesn't sound like much but...

that's probably not gonna do much. farmerdave and I hit it yesterday afternoon at folly's. pretty low and clear, some fish, not many though. hooked one and lost it. need some good rain!!!

Yesterday's rain helped and more to come tomorrow and Friday. Meanwhile, here's the video of Alby I promised:

I was up last weekend for the first time ever. Pretty cool. Landed 2; 29in and a 26in. Largest fresh water fish I have ever caught with a fly rod. Some good fun. I took 'em on Clousers.

Ironic choice since I don't think I was doing anything illegal on this trip...

I thought the guitar lick created an appropriate atmoshere for landing a steelhead. Plus, it was handy at the time.

Hit elk today started at platz rd there were few fish in the first hole by the bridge pier quickly out numbered by other fisherfmen moved down no fish until the next semi deep run seen 2. On down the next hole again more people than fish on downstream to almost to the rt98 bridge there were 10 to 15 fish approximtly the water was slightly stained I would say 20 inches visibility
No snow yet..... hoping for some rain to get them fish moving and feeding better ooh yeah I didn't land any I snapped 2 foul hooks off andlost 5 to bad tippet or old tippet I didn't get a water temp....

Nello,

Seems you had some action at least. Five hook-ups isn't bad. Better get that tippet issue solved for next weekend!

Problem solved I'm testing it tomorrow just confused on where I should go....maybe east...suggestions or should I go upper elk and try to find un pressured fish
