East Hickory Creek, Forest Co, 4-29-18

The falling temperatures over the last 24 hours really caused stream temps to sharply dip. Early morning was 30 degrees with snow flurries. Finally about 3pm the sun peeked out and air temp was 46 so I gave it a whirl.

I fished the DHALO section from 345pm to 510pm. Water temp was 42. Flow was very nice and color was good. I saw 2 mayflies (possibly Red Quill) and 2 caddis. I used a streamer and I never had a strike.

For reference, I also checked water temp on Queens Creek (42) and Beaver Run (40).

Thanks for the reports Prospector, I enjoy hearing about my old (30 years ago) stomping grounds. Sorry to hear the weather didn’t cooperate. I always found may to be the prime months for fishing forest county.

Sounds good. I’m here all week (turkey & trout) so if the streams remain fishable I’ll be putting a report out every day

Just for reference I checked the water temp on East Hickory to see how much it climbed from yesterday’s 42 degrees.

Conditions today: It was a total cloudless day, very sunny. Today’s air temperature was 26 at sunrise and 65 degrees at 345pm.

Today water temp on East Hickory at 630pm was 46 degrees. Only a 4 degree jump. I think this is because East Hickory basically flows north-south so sun doesn’t hit the water very long plus many stretches of E Hickory are shaded by heavy pines.

Quite jealous of the turkey/fishing trip. Can't seem to get away for that this year, and since my uncle's widow sold his camp years ago it got more complicated to do. Have a great time!!
