Time Fished: 745pm to 910pm
Weather Conditions: 68 sunny but the deep valley was in shade
Water Conditions: 54 degrees and Clear
Insects: I could not catch any insects; a small yellowish stonefly was the most abundant (20+), dark Caddis about an 18 was next (these were really hard to see in the dimly lit hole) they might have been most abundant , saw some small flies that appeared to be mayflies (looked to have a rusty body), saw 1 coffin fly.
I left Sugar Creek early with hopes that some fish might be rising on East Hickory Creek. I knew there would be no risers on Sugar. When I arrived I did not see anyone fishing the DHALO. I got to the hole I wanted and walked to the creek. Nothing was rising and my 2 fly rig from Sugar Creek was still attached. I ran it top to bottom and had no strikes. Switched to a streamer and I missed a brown at the end of the pool. By the time I finished the hole I had seen a few rises so I switched to a rusty spinner. After about 30 casts I caught that first riser and just saw 1 other fish come up and it did not return. I car hopped a short ways down downstream to try another hole, but never saw a rise.
Beautiful stream but a tough one indeed. There were about 8 groups of streamside tent campers scattered throughout the DHALO on the Allegheny National Forest. The road is still in very good shape.
