Butler Co home, Forest Co camp
Time Fished: 330pm - 430pm

Weather Conditions: 64 degrees, sun and cloud mix

Water Conditions: 49 degrees, heavier flow but relatively clear

Insects: The hatching insect count was pretty high. Confirmed there were 5 different insects hatching. many Blue Quill #18, another small Mayfly #20, only saw 2 March Browns, several Brown Stones #16, another real tiny Stonefly with clear wings.

I tied on a streamer that I often use on East Hickory Creek to quickly fish through and get a good assessment of which areas have the most fish. Without getting a strike in the first hole and subsequent riffle, I took the temp and saw it was 49 degrees. That pretty much guarantees a slow day. East Hickory needs to be 52 or above before the trout get active. I ended with no strikes. Another fly fisher I ran into also had no strikes. If you are planning to fish here wait for a string of warmer days.

This DHALO happens to be on Allegheny National Forest land so there are always a number of tent campers. Due to the pandemic, there was only about half of the usual number of creekside campers. Especially considering it was opening day for turkey and a great weekend forecast.

Sorry for the damaged wings on the blue quills. They were feisty buggers and didn't want to go in the pill bottle.
