Time Fished: 6pm - 845pm
Weather Conditions: Started out 74 degrees and sunny and ended 68 degrees and rain
Water Conditions: 58 degrees, slightly off color,
Insects: I didn’t see any but some fish were rising sporadicly, so something was there.
The hole I wanted to fish was occupied, so I started at the next hole and fished downstream for several hundred yards. I ran a streamer and only had 1 fish on (a rainbow) but didn’t land it. As I caught up to 2 fellows below me, a crack of lightening about a mile away sent all of us toward our vehicles. They had only caught a few tonight but had done pretty well in the morning.
The other fishers left for camp and I drove to the hole I wanted to fish earlier. I chucked my streamer around and had lots of fish chasing. I landed just 1 brown. As I fished through the hole I noted 8-9 trout were rising. Again no visible insects but the trout were rising for some reason. I switched to a Caddis dry and immediately caught a brown. Dry fly drifts are difficult in this hole with the varying currents. Compounding matters the rain became intermittent (downpour to light rain to fully stop). Just unfortunate for me the rain couldn’t hold off until after dark. I managed to land another brown and rainbow before calling it quits. Thunderstorms lasted for about 2 hours so it’s anyones guess if East Hickory will be fishable.
As always there were several groups of campers at the free campsites on the National Forest. The best news was the road crew must have run the grader on the stretch of road since there were no potholes. Best shape it’s been in at least for 3-4 years
