No work today and it being my birthday I decided I would go fly fishing. Unfortunately almost all the local streams were blown out from the T-storms. The East Brandy didn't look too bad (on the USGS) and was only about 20 min. away so I decided to try it.
Got to the creek just before 12 and it was in the 80's already. Turned out that not only was it high (but doable) it was almost opaque with mud. Figured it was worth a try and managed a small Brown in the first run. Problem was everything looked like holding water so it was hard to pin them down. Fished a goodly stretch and eventually caught a nice brown in the same spot where I started.
The clarity was just starting to improve a little so I drove upstream a few miles and took a lunch break. My plan was to fish some smaller runs where I had past success. That worked out, and landed a nice rainbow in the first run. Landed a decent brown in a classic Sycamore hole and hooked and lost another. The next run proved to be the best; I landed a couple on the way up including a 14" Brown; best fish of the day. On the way back I hooked a few more there and landed two nice Browns. Also hooked and lost something pretty big; had it on for awhile but the water was raging and my tippet was 5x to 6x with most takes on the latter. No secret spot this was right by the road.
I was pretty much tight lining with a sighter for the most part though I used an indicator a few times. No risers and little bug activity. Black ant was again the big winner. All and all it was a great way to spend my birthday!
