Dad and I fished the east branch for a short time Sunday late afternoon hoping to catch bass. We fished four deep holes from the upper end of Kerr Park to a bit upstream of the 282/Wallace Ave bridge. I fished a popper/dropper combo and he fished a clouser. I caught one 9-10" smallmouth bass within two minutes on an orange and black stonefly nymph that was my dropper. We did not catch another bass in the next two hours, though we saw some small ones.
I caught loads of redbreast sunnies and bluegills on the nymph and one or two that were big enough to eat the popper (all of them tried, no matter what size they were). Dad eventually put some big olive nymph on and had the same results as me.
Water was somewhat low and very clear, temp felt like low to mid 70s. There are still a few stocked trout hanging out in that area including a palomino. USGS gage below Downingtown says the water temp today is a cool 69 degrees...it is usually around 80 this time of year! If you want to go for leftover stocked trout, you might have better luck with them than the smallies. The DHALO section probably has quite a few left.
