E. Branch of Antietam Cr., Franklin Co., 12/15/08

I made the short trip up to the E. Branch of Antietam today and fish were cooperative. The stream was a little high and murky, but I prefer those conditions for throwing streamers. I managed four browns from 8-13inches on a black wooley bugger and a black cone head bunny leech. It was about 65 degrees outside and the wind was blowing a little, but the fishing was great. I also breifly fished Big Hunting Cr., Fredrick Co., MD today and caught some beautiful wild browns and hold over brookies on a bead head caddis imitation.

As a point of curiosity, has anyone one fished the W. Branch of Antietam Cr.? I read in Dave Wolf's book that the E. Branch is the better of the two sections, and I have only ever fished the E. Branch. I also have fished the headwater section of Antietam creek near the spillway and caught some beautiful native brookies. Any input would be appreciated.

WB of the Antietam is ok in the stocked sections, the stockies actually holdover well. I was at the section near the Legion on Rt 16 two-three months ago and managed two bows there. Some of the best water though are on a couple of spring fed tribs which with a little research and a friendly "hello" to the property owners may allow you to fish them (you must ask for permission). Also south of mt alto along 997 is a nice stocked section where the Antietam Watershed Assoc. has planted for stream buffer, there is a nice BWO hatch there in mid May which the stockies rise easily too.
