Got out for a couple hours in the morning with my brother and 9 year old nephew. Got on the stream a little before 7 a.m. Started right by the car and I caught a stockie on my first cast, followed by several more hits immediately thereafter. Dredging egg patterns for stocked bows in the early season is always effective. So I quit fishing it and called in the brother and nephew to try to get him a fish. It was a tough spot. Deep little run surrounded by limbs and he had a spinning rod and wasn't real good with it. But managed to get him one and my brother got one while trying to teach as well. We were there no longer than a half hour and nobody was skunked, including the 9 year old, so I'll call that a success.
After a while we wondered upstream to try to find some fish in an easier spot to fish, but it was packed. Guys in all the likely looking spots. Should be expected on a Saturday on a special reg section during the closed season. So we returned to that first spot which was still open. I mostly watched, and occasionally waded out to unhook his offering from a limb, but the 9 year old wasn't having much luck. Every so often they asked me to throw in again to "see if they were still active". They were, I caught 2 more that way. But we only had a short time to fish with a long day planned, and quit around 9 a.m. I have a feeling there were a pile of them in that little hole where one could clean up. It's right by a parking area so probably where they dump a few buckets in.
Was nice to be out, with family, and get a youngin his first trout of the year. And while he does his share of fishing, that's the first time the younger one ever saw somebody catch a fish on a fly rod, he said. We tried to talk him into trying it, but no go. Someday...
