I just recently got myself a Cabelas CGR fiberglass 4 weight and strung it up for its maiden use at Dunbar this morning. I arrived at the creek at 7:45 am. There was some snow and ice on the edges of the water, but the flow was good and the water was mostly clear. I took one temperature reading and my thermometer read 34 degrees. I fished the upper section of the water near the confluence with Glade Run. I decided to go with a size 12 tan nymph pattern that I tied with a size 14 egg dropper. On my fifteenth cast I was fortunate enough to pick up a nice brown trout on the egg. The CGR had a great feel to it - but I guess anytime you catch your first trout on a new fly rod it feels good! I picked up a little brookie on the nymph in the next hole I fished. I then hooked into two more decent sized browns, but only was able to land one of them.
I hiked downstream to an after a few casts I noticed a rise on the far bank. I figured the trout was taking midges and I did see some small flies hatching (probably size 18). I tied on a foam beetle as an indicator with a size 20 midge and on the fifth cast, the trout rose to take the beetle but refused it at the last minute! I didn't have many dry fly patterns with me, but I had some some size 14 olive colored emergers. So I tied one on with a size 20 olive colored midge dropper. The trout chased the emerger a few times, but I ultimately picked up this brown on the midge dropper. Wanted to take a picture of that brown, but my cell phone battery was dead...
I left the stream at 11:30. It really was a beautiful morning to be out. This was my second time ever fishing in January. I was surprised I didn't run across any other anglers though. Thanks for reading.
