So you wanna catch big fish on a fly. 20260504_141624.jpg20260504_121443.jpg Hooked into a monster. As it took me into my backing within a sec then I realized my backing was going out just as fast I tried to grab from spinning to stop the fish and. The handle slammed my pinky. Finally got the handle and then my thumb took a beating. Haha Fly finally came loose and I got all my line back.

Had it tight usually stops them but not this time. At the end I finally raised it and it was just a game of tug of war. Until the fly came out.

I too have been stung by the reel. And the line, and mono 🙂

Seems like it might not have been a ski that took you into backing across the river, as they tend to not do that. Sure, sometimes, but not really runners. Not sure what other species are in the water you were fishing. In PA - Stripers, large wipers, large flatheads, or the elusive 36" PA brown 😉 can all take you into backing.

Could have been a big cat but didn’t act like it. Other than that the only other thing that is big in the waters are Muskie. I called it a river but it is a big creek flowing into the river. Believe me when I say this fish eats those big trout as my fly was 8in long and trout pattern. Never heard of any big bass caught their so no to them.

I’ve been at this for over 10yrs I know what I’m getting and yes I’ve had some Muskie run but it was usually a run and the current took them but this one ran and yes you can side pressure some and stop but not this one. It took off like a rocket to get to those big rocks. I’m guessing it was hooked before.
