OK, here's my first stream report. Yesterday morning it snowed about 2" here in Mountville followed by some cold rain. What else better to do then go fly fishing? 🙂
Air temps were in the mid-30's, I didn't get the water temp but it was cold. The stream was running fast and high but was relatively clear. There was actually some sort of midge hatch going on--small black midges with a dusky olive thorax. Given that, I decided to use a small caddis larvae I tied based on a pattern my nephew came up with--olive rabbit fur dubbing and peacock. The idea worked, and fishing for an hour in the stretch of stream just north of the Marrieta Pike I caught two small rainbows.
We then shifted over to the stretch of stream where its crossed by 772 just to try something different. Since we were in an area that looked more agricultural and the rain had likely washed critters in the water, I switched to a pink San Juan that I just tied that morning. In an other hour of fishing right near the bridge, I landed a creek chub, a 14" sucker (actually rather fun to land) and a nice fat 12" rainbow. My brother-in-law was about to be skunked for the day, but he came over to the hole I was at and landed an even larger and fatter rainbow, 13" but very chubby. We could see more trout in that hole, including a big brown, but we had to head back home to get some real work done.
Never a bad day when you can fish--and I am now seriously addicted to fly fishing.
