We started with a float on Sunday prior to Memorial Day. Due to dropping water levels and rising temps, I feared this may be our only opportunity. Fished with Stimey, DaveS, ElijahK and Ines from the Capra Inn. Floated mainstem and encountered a very cool scenario. Wind kicked up and was blowing big golden stones off the banks and into the water. The fish responded by blowing them up. It only lasted for a few minutes but was something to see. Basically dead all afternoon. Low water, bright sun, hippiefest and not many bugs. Late in the day, the lid came off. Sulphurs, Grey Fox, several caddis species, spinners, etc. Hooked several fish but zero to net.

Monday, did a little exploring on upper WB and EB. Caught one nice brown but again, quiet due to low water and bright sun. That evening, I took everyone to one of my favorite pools on the lower EB. No bugs...no rises until 15 minutes before it was too dark to see. Dave had crossed the river and wasn't seeing any risers but I had my nephew below a spring seepage where the water was 3 degrees cooler. We must have had 15 fish in casting distance. Landed on good brown, missed several including a fish that snapped my 4x like it was 7x.

Tuesday, back to explore upper sections early in the day. Pretty quiet again. Hit the same sections late in the day and the fog was too thick to see a fish feeding more than 8' away. I could hear tons of fish feeding but couldn't see ANY of them. Just stood there for hours and lost interest when the fog got even thicker.

By Wednesday, it was just me and the nephew. We tossed in a round of golf rather than try to fish 70 water in 86 degree humid temps. I still saw several guys out there and they probably accidentally killed whatever they'd hooked. That afternoon, brief storm got the bugs kick started. We landed a few in a riff on PT nymphs. Just at dusk we had a few coffin fly spinners. Pricked a few in the mouth or hooked briefly and then lost.

Thursday, skipped early fishing and went up river to hopefully find the heavier spinner fall of drakes. What we ended up with was Sulphurs, caddis and a few leftover MB spinners. Caught a couple little guys in the 10"-11" range. Hooked 1 real heavy fish but the hook bent and came loose. The nephew landed a nice bow nymphing and I was afraid it wasn't going to make it after the battle. I held him in the current for 5 minutes and he never tried to get away. After I felt he'd recovered, tapped him on the tail and he jumped out of my hand / swam away.

Friday, did an early float since the flow was up a bit and the cool night dropped the water temp to 62-63. We only had 2 1/2 hours until the sun baked the river to 70 degrees. We caught a couple browns in the 17"-18" range but decided to simply row out rather than injure any fish in the harsh conditions.

To sum it up....probably the most awful conditions and fishing I've had up there in YEARS if not ever. Luckily, they got a bit of rain (very little) and some cool temps w/ cloud cover. That's dropped the temps into high 50's on most waters. Hopefully they get some rain or a bit more water let out of the dams. At these flows, anglers need to check water temps every 60-90 minutes. When in doubt, don't fish. Protect the resource first.

One thing that was pretty cool was DaveS took some underwater video of lamprey eels building rock mounds and spawning.

they were at the head of every shallow riffle in their nests. the first couple scared the beejesuz out of me until i knew what to avoid...

we also saw a large doe cross the river in late morning.

pretty cool stuff up there...

Tom,
haven't even sat in the boat or moved it from the driveway at this point. With a 150 cfs release, your boots barely get wet and the feeders were all but dry. Flows have been running so low, you'd have to drag a kayak in spots. I just hope the fishery doesn't suffer too much damage before things improve. 99% of the rain we got here missed that area. This week's cloud cover and overnight lows have restored good temps but that won't last forever. They need rain. The maiden voyage will be in the next few weeks. Susky for bass with the nephew.

We found bugs and fish... could have caught them but the water was too warm. I'm not going to kill them for my own amusement. 20 yrs ago, I'd go up and couldn't fish because it was too high to wade. Now there's no water. Guides are struggling, motel wasn't busy, diner was empty, etc. We fished the same week last year and the WB was over 5500 cfs at Hale Eddy gauge. This year it was 200 cfs. I'll get a few more shots this summer if there are any releases. I'm just wondering if this is some type of test release plan for the new hydroelectric system they're installing or if it's precautionary drought releases.

:-o

Your favorite lower eb pool.... Uh oh that may be the pool i was in last time i was there! :-0

Were going to habe to fish your second favorite pool in september...I got the hookup

Here's the video Kray alluded to. God those things are hideous.Lampreys

They were lamprey eels and not the american eels?

edit: I guess the fins I see in the video tell the difference. I had no idea they were in the river that far up.

I love watching me miss a fish from 2012..... Ahhh Shane!

He should just put a Paff blooper reel togethor.

I'll provide the strong comedy closer with me pizzing my waders and with my driftboat dismount in 12" of water where I completely vanish underwater. LOL. Maybe a little Nick casting to "rising fish" that were actually bullet ricochets from guys doing target practice. You going through Cadosia sideways while trying to tie up nymph rig. Should be plenty of quality footage

I actually strive to get some good fishing video, but you two guys are always fooling around, missing fish, peeing your waders. It's like fly fishing in a damn clown car for heavens sake!

All that aside, I do generally come away from the D with some pretty interesting lessons. Some are more fly fishing related than others.

Lol Cadosia sideways... lesson learned.

In all seriousness I would really like to get back out with you guys soon.

Soon as they decide to release again, the world will be a wonderful place. How about a tropical storm spinning over us for a couple of days? I'll take 3500 cfs on either branch over 200 cfs.

If they don't bake the fish this summer, we'll do a get together in September. Have to make sure it doesn't conflict with summer camp visits from parents. They book all the rooms for 40 miles. Legs see what transpires over the next 3 -4 weeks.

Couple of pics I forgot to post. The action photo of the nephew and jumping bow is pretty sweet.

Kray,

Must have just missed you guys. I was up from 5/29 until 6/4. Saturday the 30th was warm but we hit nice cool down. Floated lower west through to Buck on Monday and it was tough to say the least. I think all these weather swings and low water are wreaking havoc. I had my best luck on the BK where I got tons of coffins and other spinnerfall. Landed a monster rainbow on the night before a left, hooked him like 6 feet in front of me. He was all of about 20". I think in the weamer book the talk about how rare it is for those rainbows to get over 20" in the system there. It was nice vacation so I can't complain too much but the Upper EB was brutally low and sad to see it that way. This was my last big hurrah up there since I got a little one coming in August.
