Lower EB on 5/14
Cloudy, cool, drizzle with a water temp of 52-ish. Good clarity and fish rising when I arrived at 7am. Caddis, midges and olives on or near water. By 8, wind picked up to a steady 15 with gusts in the 30 range. Lots of charcoal and brown/tan caddis. Attempted to fish until 3-4pm. Forced to wait 20 minutes between casts due to wind. As soon as the wind would lay down, the caddis swarms would come back and the fish were on top feeding instantly.... then the wind would blow for 30 minutes straight. Took several smaller browns & bows on nymphs (MB, caddis larva, small black beadhead nymph)
Lower WB on 5/14 6:30pm - dark
STILL WINDY, water with typical greenish tint. Caddis, caddis and more caddis. Also some olive spinnners on the water. Took fish on CDC olive caddis, CDC tan caddis, CDC charcoal egg laying caddis and MB emerger. No fish of any size.
5/15 Main Stem of D
Floated 5 miles between 1pm and dark
Water clarity was good, temp not taken but it was below 60 for sure. Once again, wind storm blowing down river. Between 3-4 steady winds in excess of 35 mph without any break. It was hard to see bugs due to debris and white caps on the pools. When the wind would stop, there were fish rising EVERYWHERE. In deep runs and in less than a foot of water on the shady banks. I saw a few MB but it was mostly caddis. Toward dusk, heavy hatches of grey fox and sulphurs. Caddis egg layers returned at dusk. Lots of rising fish. Took a few more, none of any size. Very hard to hit your target due to winds. Very tough and frustrating.
