Delaware River, Hale Eddy, NY 8/18/10

Mostly cloudy, mid 70's air temp, water temps in the high 40's-low 50's. The river level decreased to a little over 900 cfs. Water was stained and may be due to lake turning over.... already.

Floated from Hale access to 191 bridge with fadeaway and englishprof. Tricos were in the air when we launched but didn't see any activity on them. Mostly nymphed during the day but there was sporadic BWO and Sulphur hatches that had decent numbers of fish on top feeding. Shoved off from the boat launch and had a fish on in the first 50' of the drift but lost him. Never a good sign to hook up that quick.

Managed a few browns on PT soft hackle, cdc sulphur emerger. Few rainbows on PT soft hackle, sulphur nymph and cdc sulphur emerger.

Only took 2 quick snapshots because I always forget that I have a camera w/ me.

I like the spots on the upper & llower jaws of the rainbow....kinda looks like a mustache and goatee. When will that finally go out of style? :roll:

Nope. Found it hanging from a tree branch last time I was out. 🙂

Actually bought 2 since you were cleaning up on them. Had a couple 'big uns' swirl under my ISO but no takers.

Flyswatter, that is exactly what I noticed.

Sounds like a decent enough trip. Flow and weather was cooperating. That's two huge hurdles out of the way. Shame you didn't see more bug activity.

So the big question is . . . when are you going to mover up there?

I'm thinking that I saw rising fish from 10:30 - 11 am thru dark. Got fairly heavy hatch between 6 pm and 8:30 pm.

Caught a big sucker in that run below the bridge earlier this spring. The flow was lower then.

She was really pumping. You'd need an anchor to get it down deep enough to catch a sucker right now. Doesn't it seem a little early for the lake to be turning over?

One of the coolest bows I've seen.

I was up there last year after the lake turned over... sometime in September I think. Water was much darker than in your pic and had a ton of junk in it...

In mid Sept last year, the river became muddy and stayed that way until Nov. They were working of the water supply tunnel and were blowing 1200-1500 cfs out for months. Hopefully, it isn't too murky come Sept JAM. If it is, we'll have to head down the main or over to the east.

Still think this is the best looking bow I'd caught so far. Last MAY on EB

Ummm, shut it! If they isn't done raising up, I can't make em take a dry, can I? In early May, maybe. In August, nope. Near the end of the float, I did put on a giant ISO and had 2 really nice fish blow it right out of the water. I think they turned away at the last second and the big boils actually knocked the fly into the air. Pretty cool but not a cool as them taking it.

I'll take notes while watching you in September.

Caught that one not too far from Fireman's Park 😉 My favorite section of river over there and I'll say that's 0% chance of being a stockie.
