Got up early and decided to exercise my brook trout rod, a light 7' 4wt. Diamondback I won in a raffle. It had just rained lightly; which was not in the forecast. The stream was surprisingly low, and crowded with meat hunters after a recent derby. Tan caddis and midges were abundant. I found a quiet run that is tough to fish from the side the average guy approaches from. First cast yielded a fat 15'' rainbow, which was good and bad. The guy who I had carefully gone around in the next pool, promptly moved down and started fishing almost directly in my drift. Karma was on my side, and he lost both fish he hooked, while I picked away at them. This seemed to discourage him, and he soon left. They were not hitting as well as I thought they would, except for a short period when I hooked five and landed a couple. Interestingly, one of the most productive patterns was a no. 18 soft hackle with a clear, bead head. Fished from a little after 6AM til almost nine when I left to do the weekly food shopping. Picked up two brook, and another fat rainbow on my way out from a pool that was shallow and had almost no current. Looked a little like this:
Counted twenty three vehicles on my way out. By next weekend these fish (the survivors) will be so schooled the chebbs will move onto the next contest site. Now if we could just dial up some more rain.
