Conestoga River, Lancaster County 07-06-2012

Waited 'til late evening to give the 'stoga another try. I was fishing upstream from the city. Caught numerous little smallmouth in the tailout of a couple of pools on a simple white popper. White marabou tail with a wrap of chartreuse estaz behind the head. They were going nuts for it. Dead drifted or stripped back. Still haven't located any larger fish even in water with depth and structure that should hold them. It was a sweltering night and the water is very warm. Sporadic caddis and what I would assume is a variation of a cahill coming off. Didn't really see fish keying on them although there were occasional rises. The warm water insurgency continues!

Try tying on a size 10 white wulff or something next time you see those flies. You might be surprised what will come up!

As for the poppers, man, white always rocks for me. Don't know where the big bass are. I'm thinking of trying the Cocalico here in Ephrata soon (not in 101 degree heat...). Maybe they're all up my way!

Never bothered putting a WW on last night but had a couple on my patch from previous outing. No doubt it probably would have worked but it was lazy fishing last night. Something to be said for tying a fly on and never changing the entire time you're fishing. I'm very close to the Cocalico down here in B-town and plan to try it sometime this summer. 101 degrees is beyond my temperature threshold for fishing so it will have to wait. Hope for rain and some cooler temps.

The bigger smallies are definitely holed up somewhere. Haven't seen the big'uns in County Park in a while. They're there, but they're not coming out to play!
