Cold Run, Schuylkill CO, 6/13/15

This is my first stream report. If I mess it up please be gentle.

This was the second time I've fished Cold Run. The first time didn't go good at all. I didn't even see a fish. The river I usually fish is starting to get warm and I just wanted to see some different trees and rocks so I decided to explore a little.

I passed by Cold Run on my way to another stream which I couldn't figure out how to access without bush whacking through more miles than I cared to do. Once that fell apart I needed to figure something else out. I remembered the brand new "Fishing permitted courtesy of landowner" signs at Cold Run and headed back that way hoping it was indeed cold.

Air temp was just under 80. The water was 65ish. It was not quite as cold as I had hoped but within bounds so I got my gear together and gave it a shot. As I was walking downstream along the road a group of motorcycles passed me and one fool shouted "There are no fish in there". Luckily I knew better. I turned down to the stream and about 5 casts later I took this picture

It took a sulfur comparadun. Right after that I saw a couple caddis so I decided to try an EHC with a caddis emerger dropper.
It didn't take to see the brookies were going after the EHC and leaving the emerger alone so I cut it off and just fished the EHC.
No fish were rising that I saw but the brookies kept hitting it anyway. I missed a lot of them or was getting splashing refusals but did manage to bring a couple to hand.

All in all it went better this time and mostly because I followed the advice given here. Small streams have been really tough for me but there may be hope for me yet.

That is a nice, wild brown in your hand and although the stream has been dominated by wild brookies in the past, there have been occasional wild browns and wild rainbows present as well. The new area where you fished is just downstream from the confluence of the warmer Beaver Creek. This may be why the stream seemed a bit warmer than you expected. It is even possible, depending upon where you fished, that full mixing of the warmer Beaver Ck water with the colder Cold Run water had not yet occurred. Because of possible warmer temps, that segment of Cold Run may also be attractive to browns.

Someone needs to thank the land owner for the new signs. Kudos to him. I always loved fishing that stream especially after a good rain. I have actually caught some decent fish of size out of there in the past too. Great report on an awesome stream.
