Codorus Creek TT Section 9/19/08

Got out on my beloved trout water for the first time in two months today. The creek in looking good, water level just below normal, cold and clear.
Nothing was rising, there were some small caddis coming off. I ended up fishing a size 18 yellow scud. Missed a couple fish, lost a couple and landed one 13 inch rainbow trout. Yep a rainbow, a stockie none the less. Someone dumped a damn stockie into a class A wild trout stream.
It had a clipped dorsal fin and a flat face from banging into the hatchery walls, but he must have been in the creek a couple months because his pink stripe was beautiful.
This is the first rainbow I've caught in the Codorus TT section in more than 5 years.

Why assume the worst re: someone dumped the fish in a class A stream? The fish probably originated from the stocked trout section located upstream of the class A stretch. That section does is warm in the summer and does not support a wild trout population, although just like the rainbow that swam down a wild brown may occasionally swim up. Furthermore, there is limited reproduction of rainbows in the wild brown trout stretch, so it is not as though a new species had been introduced.

Sorry, this rainbow didn't swim several miles upstream from the closest stocking location into the TT section of Codorus Creek.
Above Spring Grove and the Glatfelter plant, the creek doesn't get any warmer then maybe 60 degrees. There may still be wild rainbows in the TT section, but this wasn't one of them. Never saw a wild bow with a clipped fin or a flat face.
Add to that the hundreds of trout I've caught out of this section over the last 7-8 years since they stopped stocking, this is the first rainbow since before I started keeping a log book in 2005.

There is a possibility that this fish came from the lake or the other branch of the Cod (put and take section). I have caught several rainbows over the years fishing through the upper section toward the spill way.

I fished it this morning from 9:30 - 12:00. I was the only person on the stream. The fish are really starting to get brilliant fall colors. Picked up this guy last week.

I agree with Tennjed and Mike. I caught a 15-16" bow upstream above the RR trestle near the Dam. Surprised me. My first Bow there. They do stock the Codorus upstream of the TT section. Remember the WB comes from the lake and provides the cool water to the Codorus. The Codorus upstream of the TT section is a put & take fishery with rainbows. I am not aware of fin clipping though.

Here's a photo I of said rainbow. I see ya'lls point about the stockie. Still a bummer. I broke my own rule about photographing fish laying on the grass but for a split second I thought about wacking this guy on the head and removing him permanently from the stream.

I don't know where you were fishing but it is very easy for the fish to swim down to the TT section. But you are right, the last wild rainbows I caught there were at least 5 years ago if not longer and I have never caught a stocker. I may have come from the lake itself it could survive the trip through the dam.

Trout, especially rainbows, can travel huge distances. I doubt he was dumped there, I bet he swam there. That doesn't mean there are many of them.
