I spent the last two mornings at the Codorus. The water levels are about a foot low and the creek is crystal clear. Monday I got one small brown on a BHPT. There were also a bunch of people on the stream. Every section seemed to have a fisherman.
Yesterday was much better. Started off above the railroad bridge. Worked the whole way down from the water release gates, didn't get a bite. Headed down to the area we call the steps, ended up catching seven browns, five on scuds and two on little stone fly dries. There wasn't any hatch, I just wanted to work back to the car with a dry and a stonefly had landed on my vest.
I am really concerned about the Codorus this year. I am not seeing the numbers of fish that I have in the past. I spend a lot of time when the water is as clear as it's been just standing on the bank and watching. I'm just not seeing any fish.
What I have been seeing are worm containers and an empty bottle of salmon eggs. Please folks, if you're fishing the Codorus and you witness someone poaching, please call the fish commission. These are naturally reproducing fish, not stockers that's why it's C&R throughout part of the year and artificial baits only.
On a lighter note, there is a big BIG tom turkey hanging out above the railroad bridge. I've seen him a couple of times over the last two seasons. Yesterday I saw him standing on the opposite bank watching me so I started clucking to him. The bird answered and for the next 20 mins, we had an interesting conversation. Then one of his hens, obviously jealous of me, flew up into the tree above me and tried to poop on me. That tom's beard is so long, it drags the ground when he walks!!
I started my own flyfishing blog, anyone who is interested should check it out. Doesn't cost anything to have your own site.
