Codorus Creek, Trophy Trout, York County 6/16/13

Hit the water about 2:30 and fished till about 6:30. Water was back to it's "normal" level after the rains from earlier in the week. It still had a bit of a stained color. The day was mostly overcast and a shower came through about 4:30.

I fished the area above the fish bowl (I think that is what it is called if my memory serves me right) up to just below the sawmill. I caught 15 to 20 browns, nothing of any real size. There were quite a few consistent risers and I had no trouble picking them up or at least getting the to hit. I believe they were eating ants or some other terrestrial but I could not confirm it. I did see a couple of different sporadic hatches happening. The first that I saw was a large (size 12) white mayfly that I assume was a cahill. I only saw two and they were consumed before I could get a closer look. I saw a couple of caddis here and there, one size 18 sulfur and about a dozen or so little white mayflies (size 18) but I could not capture one to identify.

I fished a cdc and elk caddis (size 16) with a dark sulfur nymph (size 16) as a dropper for the whole time. Most of the fish came on the dropper but I had enough hits and near misses to keep the dry on.

I was on the early shift, 11:30 to 2:30, just must of missed you. I caught six, all on nymphs. I could not see what they were rising to. I tried a light cahill and black ant but no takers. Probably my presentation. I saw some first timers wet wading and thought "you only make that mistake once".

No doubt. That is one cold stream, even in the middle of summer! Glad to hear it's fishing well. It's a unique stream that can be somewhat "moody" at times.

The more I think about it, I believe the fish were taking emergers. The caddis that I throw rides flush so they could have mistaken it for an emerger as well as a caddis. I did have quite a few fish turn and look at the dry, only to refuse at the last minute.

I think you're right about the emergers. a few times I had fish on an uptake which was a surprise. I'm not ashamed to admit I've been skunked many times on that little stream.

All you need to catch fish on the Codorus is a green weenie ;-)
