Codorus Creek 4/22/07

Hit codorus at 10 am today and it was crowded for the likes of codorus so i went to the upper section above the Laughmans mill. what a beautiful day to be on the stream. landed about 7 or 8 browns ranging from 6 to 15 inches and lost almost as many. also lost a hog (had to be over 20) that had me really wishing i had a net but he took care of the landing problem for me :-x

tons of midges but no risers and no mayflies, but then again i didnt stay over two hours so i probably missed any hatches

when do the sulphurs start on codorus? i just started fishing there last year after the sulphurs had finished :-(

I was there also, down by the tracks, biggest crowd I've seen everyone was out. I was there 'til 4:30 no hatch came off. There were alot of big black midges the fish weren't interested in. Caught 5 on a black bugger.
Look for the Sulphurs around the end of May, if I remember correctly. The hatch starts in the late afternoon up until dark alot of times. Sometimes though the spinners start hanging above the riffles right at dark and you have to make a pattern change as the fish start to ignore the duns.
I bet I know where you hooked the big'un!

If it is big fish that you seek, the greatest density of large trout has always been outside of the special reg area, even when it extended down to a point about a mile outside of Menges Mills. It is all about the habitat, not the regs.

It is true what you say about habitat and big fish, also the lack of pressure increases their number. This is especially true if the area is off limits to fishing unless you know some thing the rest of us don't. Immediately below the regs area it is posted by a hunting club as of last year. Below that I am not positive but was told it is posted the whole way to Gladfelters paper mill. Above the regs area there is no good habitat, it is all put and take water.
It is all about the tailwater, the habitat and potential are there, and I believe the regs are to try to prevent total decimation. If the catch and keep bait crowd got to those wild fish the larger(breeders) fish would disappear. I don't know when the last time it was stocked, but it has been class A wild trout(not stocked) water for at least 7 years.

My comment was true even when the area that I have referenced was being stocked with adult trout, but you are correct that I was unaware of the hunting club posting as I have not been to the stream for a couple of years.

Fly man, you wouldn''t say that if you'd ever been to Silver Creek, Idaho...talk about habitat...and pressure. They get pounded but they don't leave...first of all its C&R...but they don't head somewhere else because of the pressure. the have tons of food and cover and cool, cool water. A mile or two in down stream and the water warms and the creek opens up nicely for predators. And they stay right there in the preserve getting fat, educated and frustrating the heck out every angler. I think habitat is WAaAY more important than pressure. I know Pa to Id is kind of apples to oranges but its a perfect illustration.

Come on... The TT section has some pretty good habitat. The remaining TT water not posted is very good. The locations of the big fish in that TT section are dependent upon how secluded the hole is. In the summer, the banks are littered with worm containers. I can on a weekday fish up through and get fish in the 11-14" range on the first or second pass. When I run int o smaller fish in a fishy spot...typically thats where all the worm containers are that I find...the holes without the pool bosses.

The lower section above Menges mille is posted to the twin bridges and above a bit by the hunting club.
