I made the trip up to my father in laws cabin on the outskirts of Tylersville for a four day camping/fishing trip, and here is a quick run down of the trip.
Day One: Thursday
Most of day one was spent splitting wood and cleaning up around the cabin. My father in law has a nice spring house that runs into a tributary to a tributary of the Clarion, which i would prefer not to name. I did fish that little trickle on Thursday, and noticed that the water had decent flow, with some yellow sallies, march browns, sulphers and terrestrials around. I managed to move three natives, which were all a very dark coloration in about an hour of fishing.
Day Two: Friday
I took my father in law and friend from Ohio wading on the Clarion. We had a late breakfast and did not hit the water until about 10:30. I noticed the water appeared low, but the current had a decievingly strong flow to it. We fished the area around Ridgway, which was an adventure to find parking to access the river, but we managed. The sun was high, and I saw a few caddis about, but my expectations were limited considering the time of day that we were fishing. We were able to nymph up several stocked Brookies and one stocked brown in that stretch, which was a treat because my friend from Ohio managed to catch her first fly rod fish, which happened to be a nice 14 inch brookie. On the way home, we hit a nice stocked tributary to the Clarion outside of Leeper, which produced a couple more stockers. Friday evening my old friend from Allegheny came up to camp and I introduced him to the unamed tributary, where he caught a very nice 7 inch native on a Sulpher dry.
Day Three: Saturday
I took my old college buddy from that school in Meadville up for a float trip on the Clarion in my new customized raft. We arrived at 0630 and fished until 0630 pm floating from Johnsonburg to Ridgway. Interesting stretch of water, I noticed a lot of shallow flat unappealing sections, with a few intermittent productive riffles and runs scattered between, and some very deep looking areas. We did not hammer the fish, but we did have a steady pick at mostly stocked brookies. We had a nice caddis hatch in the morning and I broke one off on top, and landed a good looking rainbow on an elk hair caddis. My buddy was chucking meat mostly from a standing position at the front of the raft and he took some nice brookies, a good smallmouth, and a huge minnow looking thing that we did not photograph (not a fallfish). About mid day, I hit a fat 14 inch brookie on a shaded run nymphing a phesant tail. The bugs were diverse and moderately heavy with Sulphers coming off in the evening along with march browns and caddis and the fish were on them, when they were present. Overall, I enjoyed the watershed, for being the first time there, and it was a great and relaxing weekend.
