Time fished: 04/21 from 0500 PM until dark and 04/22 from 0900 until 0700 PM.
Weather: Dreary couple of days with overcast skies, drizzle and wind from time to time. Great hatch weather!!! The air temps were in the mid to upper 60s for most of the trip, dropping to the upper forties at night. On Friday, we got chased off the stream by an impending rain storm, which did not end up nearly as bad as it looked.
Water: Only slightly stained and running at around 350 CFS in Ridgway. I would say it was pretty low for this time of year, and I would have preferred another couple hundred CFS for the float, but overall it was a nice rate to wade and fish. The water was ice cold to the touch near the put in, but warmed to the upper 50s as the day progressed.
Hatches: Grannoms, another size 18 dark mottled wing caddis, Male and female Hedricksons. The Hendricksons looked like they were going to have a decent spinner fall, until the storm blew in. There were also midges around in noticeable numbers.
Results: Another enjoyable trip with my old friend from College. He took a large 20 inch Rainbow right off the bat on a crayfish pattern and the rest was added bonus. The hatch had some sporadic heads rising in the afternoon and we each took a good brown on top. On Thursday, I arrived a little early and took a small wade trip waiting for him to show up. I nymphed a couple out of a deep run, and then worked up through some pockets and was surprised by a big 19 inch brown, that launched two foot in the air after taking my La fontaine bubble caddis behind a bolder. Fun trip on a recovering river.
