Mid morning til mid afternoon. Water tinged, and pushing, low fifties. Lots of tan caddis, and more midges; some fish stating to rise. Weather was sunny, and air temp 52-62. Fished the lower post contest stretch early on and had a nice chunk to myself for awhile. Caught a handful up to 15'' on caddis pupa and ants. Moved on when the chebbs and chum masters started appearing. On the third truck move, I parked, wondering while so many cars were already there. Locals who were waiting for the truck to arrive, informed me the stocking had been canceled. I didn't know or care, but informed them there were plenty of fish downstream near the "meat hole", and they all promptly left. The first riffle produce two rainbows in short order, and that was directly in front of where the cars had been parked. I missed a couple more from a shallow, fast run and worked downstream to find a gorgeous nymphing run. The top of it (really fast water) produced this likely holdover brown of 13'', a great fighter on the three wt.
Took several more twitching the flies slightly on the drift. Many of the fish had been hooked before, telling me someone else was likely protecting this spot, as well. On the way back up I took another rainbow from the shallow run where I had missed a few earlier. To top it off, two more from the first rifle, and three from the run above that, about 75' from my truck. The best fishing was from 1-2:30 PM under a bright sun! Another great day, and like almost everywhere I've fished in Del Co., another stream with plenty of trout.
A small but productive riffle:
