Had some free time so decided to try some stretches I hadn't fished this year, and close to home. Got the stream around noon, and it was sunny with a light breeze; the stream was low sixties, clear and lower than average. Midges and a caddis or two; no risers. Went with the usual dropper rig; a bead head with an ant trailer. This worked the whole time, except when a feisty rainbow wriggled loose and buried the ant just below my left finger nail. Didn't hurt until I yanked it loose with the hemostats; those crushed barb hooks can get a surprisingly good grip at times. The first stretch rewarded me with over a dozen hook ups and I landed a good no. of them. A couple of the browns were in exceptional shape; fins grown out and some orange spots. They also fought a lot harder than the rainbows. Moved my truck downstream and grabbed a bite and relaxed for a bit. Then hit it hard till about 5:30, and did slightly better in total brought to hand, though I lost and missed more fish overall. Recap: fished about five hours, hooked or rolled around three dozen trout and landed a little better than half. Also, a silly no. of chubs and sunfish. Gave my three wt. a pretty good work out, and these old legs too!
