Chester Creek, DE Co., 5/15/2015

Started around 3:30 or so and fished til about seven. Water was low and clear, temp was 64. Mostly sunny with a breeze and not much bug activity: a few caddis and a lot of midges late. Only saw risers in the super slow water, which didn't really interest me. Fish were willing but extremely quick, often rejecting my flies before my indicator stopped. I caught several by striking at a flash, and most short lining with the indicator out of the water. Fished the same caddis and ant combo the whole time since I move a ridiculous no. of fish. The most action I've seen all year, and for stocked fish some were colored out nicely. Largest fish was 20+ rainbow that thankfully hit the 5x pattern. Two different riffles produced over ten fish each. The funniest thing was landing a rainbow on an ant and finding one of my flies (exact same pattern) still stuck in his mouth. I removed it and later used it with good results.

Good report. Was the 20"+ bow one of the trout derby stockies from last weekend?

Nice report Van as always. I need to give your pupa \ ant combo a try as you fish alot of my same waters. Didnt see you over at sawmill this year, ever make it there?

Ill be up towards media next week, what access point \ section of chester do you suggest I goto to get into a couple fish?

Yeah that combo is so simple and deadly that I usually don't feel the need to change it this time of year unless there is a big hatch going on. I haven't fished that stretch (Saw Mill Rd.)of Darby all season due to the water being so low. Chester still has the best volume in DE Co. IMO.

There is disappointment this year with the amount of angler use in Chester Ck upstream from the West Branch, so there are probably plenty of fish from there to the upper limit of that section. That stretch is stocked inseason only and receives two spring stockings.
