Time Fished: 415pm - 630pm
Weather Conditions: 71 sunny
Water Conditions: clear 56. degree
Insects: stoneflies (black /Golden many sizes) coffin flies, other small mayflies

This was my first time on Cedar Run. I drove up the dirt road and fished the first bridge. I went as far as the second bridge but 2 trucks were parked there so I turned around and went back. A word of caution, this is a very narrow road with not a lot of opportunity to turn around.

The first pool below the bridge was nice and there were a few fish working so that gave me hope that I would encounter some trout. I fished upstream. It was very tight and I was not able to bring fish up in every run like some small streams.

The water levels in all streams were lower than normal so I suspect Cedar would fish better in a higher flow. There were several nice holes where no fish showed themselves. The riffles were full of insects. Every small riffle had a coffin fly in it and lots of stoneflies. Lots of insects.

I was able to land 3 wild browns but it was combat fishing. Tough casting. Limbs everywhere. Having to fish upstream in the streambed ruined it for anyone following me.

As I drove back to RT414 those 2 trucks that had been at 2nd bridge were now parked downstream from where I fished.

As I drove over to the Kettle side of the mountain I took Slate Run road. There were 3 cars fishing along the lower stretch. Once I passed the last vehicle and climbed a little further, the woods and open canopy over the road were alive with insects. Lots hitting off my windshield. I took a few photos but the enormity of the mating was lost in the photos. But I did snap one of a Yellow Sally on my hat. Basically Slate Run had the same mix of insects as Cedar and same “spinner fall”

When I reached the top of hill just below the last (and only) cabin on the left, a nice turkey gobbler crossed the road.

Nice post, even nicer fish.

Cedar run seems to be quite finicky in my experience. It and Slate get a ton of pressure compared to any other similar sized Freestone wild trout stream in the state. I have heard of magical days in optimal conditions, but my experience resembles yours. Hard to be the scenery of either stream!
