Went fishing in the Catskills this weekend. This was my first time back since the floods last year and things have definitely changed. The water is very low and warm, almost 70 in spots. They have had very little rain lately.
We fished the Willoweemoc, Beaverkill and the East Branch. I had luck on each but only a few and they were mostly small. I had 1 nice 14" brown and a 16" smallmouth. That one surprised me. Nice fight though. The rest were in the 6"-9" range. I missed several and had pretty big fish peel out line down stream thhe he turned back up and stopped. I thought I lost him till he started running up stream. I had him on the reel and all of a sudden he blasted hard and broke me off. We saw dozens of eels in all the rivers. They move up out of the main stem to spawn. Those things are so creepy and weird looking.
Overall, the fishing was slow due to the hot sunny days and warm water temps but still fun. We had to travel around alot to find temps below 68 (that's my personal cut off point). I got to meet Mary Dette which was cool. She's a neat lady and man does she tie an awesome fly. Still at 76 she ties almost every day.
If they get some rain soon, without flooding, it should start being more productive. Be sure to check conditions if you're planning on heading up anytime soon or you might be dissapointed.
