Connected with some of the forum members and we made our way out to western Maryland and the Casselmen River. This some water that flows from Maryland north into Pennsylvania. In Maryland this a stocked project that is a few miles starting in Grantsville.

Weather
A beautiful March day with a lot of sun and air temps in the mid to upper 50’s. No clouds and didn’t help with fishing.

Water
Water was very clear and temps were pretty cold running from 45 to 48 degrees during the day. Water was at about 120 CFS and very easy to get around the stream. No heavy rain for many days.

Hatches
Little black stoneflies, size #16, were all over the stream at our location from about 1:00 to the late afternoon. We all agreed it was a full-blown hatch with stoneflies all over flying around. It’s a good hatch when they are flying onto you mouth. The trout were not surfacing and saw no rises. Pretty lame stocked trout.

So with all that great hatch that trout had no interest in anything we threw at them that even look like a stonefly. We of course tried a lot of different nymph patterns and junk flies with luck. I blame the Amish (this was a joke and I hope no Amish are offended)

After being defeated on one party of the stream Alby cleverly decided we should try a different location. We headed upstream and found a new location. We had much better luck in our new spot and did better on wet flies. We didn’t see the stoneflies, but the fish were biting. We found some deeper pools and tree cover.

We did find our way to Grantsville for some dinner and coffee before heading home. A really fun day and great weather. Thanks guys for the invite!!

It was a good day. Thanks again Dave for the fun. I have to recommend the http://www.thecornucopiacafe.com/ to anyone that is in the area. That was a fine post fishing meal.

Nice day to soak up the sun and enjoy time with friends. We also got to meet the Queen of the Casselman.

Looks like everyone had a great time paflyfish style. GG

Been on that stream with Alby and his boy. Nice creek. And that strappin' Amish kid was plowing the field next to the creek with nothing but a couple of horses that day. Huge horses. don't think you could offend him. Everything was rusty spinners that day.

Fishing Western Maryland in March - nice.

Thanks for the TR and the tip about the cafe.

Anybody ever stay at the Meshach Browning's Cabins on the River?
My father and I have a cabin rented for a spur of the moment fishing trip this weekend, since we both just received our 2nd vaccine dose last week.

I am in Towson, MD and anxious to explore some other streams in MD this spring. Where did you access the water on the Casselman? I’ve never been out in that area of western MD, so I really have no idea where to even begin.

MD DNR website has a trout stocking map and stocking table that shows locations stocked with numbers & dates. They also have a Public Angler Access map that shows locations and similar stocking data. I bought Steve Moore's book Maryland Trout Fishing last spring, which covers a lot of trout water in the state and has concise information on access and brief descriptions of each place. Although it is now 11 years old, it was quite helpful to me.

There’s access right under Rte 68 and pull offs pretty much all along River Rd going downstream to the PA line.

Id go during the week if possible, it sees quite a bit pressure on weekends when they stock.
