Time Fished: 245pm - 545pm
Weather Conditions: Cloudy, Breezy, 48 degrees falling to 46
Water Conditions: 49 degrees, Flow was very tame, off color with maybe 4’ visibility
Insects: some Grannoms around. I saw about 30 rises and had a few land on me
When I arrived at Caldwell, there was another vehicle present, but I fished for 2 1/2 hours before I saw another fisherman.
The trout here were far more active than where I was earlier. It took about 20 casts to catch my first and strikes were fairly consistent over the 3 hours I spent on Caldwell.
When I first saw the other fisherman come into view downstream, he had a fish on within 5 minutes on a nymph. When I was leaving a slow moving hole, he jumped in and caught one on a dry. There were several rises in this location, but I didn’t want to taper down.
Caldwell has a muddy bottom with a lot of beaver influence. They even have a portion dammed up this year. There is also a lot of wood in the creek and it creates a lot of cover in the stream bed. In addition there is ample overhanging limbs to make it tough to fish all areas efficiently. It’s easy to be caught in brush and trees.
I’m glad I took a chance switching locations and driving 30 minutes further from my house. I caught most of my trout on a variety of streamers. I ended up with 19 browns running up to about 15 inches.
