It's almost firewood splitting season need to split and stack 5-6 cords before trout fishing gets going strong, people who burn would do not need a gym I'll vouch for that

My favorite part about splitting firewood is that afterwards I no longer need to build a fire to warm up. Others in the house might not share that viewpoint however

Unfortunately even the apocalypse won’t kill them. But I hear ya. Spring turkey was covered with them. Even with spraying my camo with permethrin or whatever that spray is.

My last outing was in early December. This is easily one of the longest stretches I've gone out of the water in my life. Thank god for house projects!

The most ticks I ever had on my waders was a February outing during a warm snap on a small stream in Tuscarora SF. Definitely happens. Definitely wasn’t this February though. 😉

Back to the OP, I like many get grumpy this time of year. January and February have some holidays and you have the NFL playoffs and the Daytona 500. March is long though. March is usually my least favorite month of the year. You think it should be Spring, but more often than not, it’s still very much Winter. And a lot of streams are closed for stocking and on nice days it seems like everybody’s packed on top of each other. I think this year February will give it a good run for its money though.
I try to stay busy with house stuff, and other stuff I know I won’t do on a nice Saturday come May. But it’s not the same as fishing. I try to make sure I have a good meal plan for the week. I enjoy cooking and looking forward to a good dinner is sometimes just enough to keep The Shining at bay. But yeah. This is getting old. Get above freezing at least.
And I have a rule. I won’t burn vacation days (to fish) until after the Trout opener. Good fishing rarely pans out this time of year (though it’s not impossible), at least to the point of warranting giving up a day you could otherwise use in better conditions later in the year. (This applies to actual vacation days from work and your account balance of “fishing points” with your wife. Or both.) If it’s nice on a weekend though…Amazing how much a Saturday skunking on a nice day in February can do for you.

I got a tick on me hiking on January 9th, yes, l hope this cold spell wipes a few out.
I'm right there with you, Joe. When we have this type of weather, leave the rod at home and take the gun.

Do any of you remember the year, it was definitely in the last 10 years or so, give or take a year when the trees were almost leafed out by the end of February. I know bluegills wee bedding one year on Memorial Lake on the full moon in March.
At the same time, I also remember a year withing the last 10 when people were still ice fishing on Memorial Lake in March.
Just once, before I die, I wish the seasons would get their crap together again.

A slower spring means a longer season with more predictable bugs. I’d like to actually enjoy BWO’s for a week or two before I need to worry about 6 other hatches

We've had several mild winters recently
Notably, in '23 and '24.
I was fishing BWO's in mid February with very little or no snow around.
And found Hendricksons and Grannoms hatching last week of March both of those winters too
Last years winter - '25 - was a little more normal.
With somewhat more snowfall, although nothing more than a few inches at a time.
Back to reality this winter for sure
