I almost made a similar post last night. My wife keeps asking me if something is wrong....I'm straight up depressed.
I have considered turning my boat into an ice breaker a few times these last few weeks lol

Lucky (hmmmm) for me this is uber-busy season at work, I don't have time to be depressed and I have an outlet for the cabin fever, shack nasties. 🙂 BUT I really could use a day standing in a stream and casting to rising fish....
On the bright side, it is still light at 5:30pm, we are heading barrel *** towards spring!

I'm getting pretty dang excited to get out on the water. It will be soon. In March, really good fishing usually starts to happen for a variety of fish species.

Same here with work but for me that makes it all worse. I don't find work to be anything more than a necessary evil to pay the bills. The busier it gets the more I need an outlet elsewhere.

I'm OK with not fishing for about 3 months.
Always lots of other thing to get accomplished around the house
And it just makes finally getting out again in the spring that much sweeter.
Plus gives me much more incentive to fish hard then for the next 9-10 months.

Agree totally. I work to fund my life not because it is my life. I certainly don't live to work, I work to afford to live. And by live I mean spend time with my family and to fish, the goal is always to maximize both. 🙂

One nice thing about all this fairly atypical ice cover is the bite during those early trips and hatches is probably going to be really good.
Why would that be your expectation? They typically feed pretty heavily in spring anyway, as it is their best growth period.

Yesterday because it was such a nice day (over 20D) I took a ride up along the east and west of the Delaware, Beaverkill and Willow. Most all of them were iced in bank to bank with very few sections of any open water at all.

I was considering taking a drive (~2 hours) down to the Esopus on one of the days next week when it's getting up to a steamy 33 degrees. Maybe I will not...
In general, I think I've come out the other end of the worst of my cabin fever. There were rough spells. The temperatures have just been brutal since back to Thanksgiving, so at least now I feel closer to the end than the beginning.

Just been my experience after long cold winters that the fishing is usually better. Probably a mix of more normal gradual hatch progressions, an actual stoppage of fishing pressure, and fish that are just happy to see the surface of the water again.

I’ve thrown in the towel. Was sick all December off and on. Fell in an icy river. Had to get winched off an icy access road. Battled low and clear conditions folllowed by everthing just freezing up into 2026.I’ve caught about 10 fish since Halloween and only been able to get out a handful of times. My skins dry, im chaffing and im sick of snow. I’m just letting my wife enjoy Sunday mornings for now while I daydream of a morning smallmouth topwater bite or a nice comfortable spring morning trout fishin…maybe in a few weeks illl fish again. I’ve only been fly fishing for a few years and these last few mild winters have spoiled me for this winter.

This weather/winter better have killed off a decent amount of ticks....thats all I have to say about that.
