Buffalo Creek, Butler County, 5/4/2020

I had the opportunity to get out to the Buffalo Creek Keystone Select last evening with my son. I had not been out of the house for several days and thought it might do my son and I some good to get some fresh air.

Fished 6 to 8:30. I was surprised that there were not many Anglers out . Water was is great shape with nice visibility. No surface activity or bugs to speak of. I am not really familiar with this crick. So I do not know if it has any hatches to speak of. We did pretty well each bringing several fish to hand and missing a few others. Most of the fish were taken on a caddis nymph and a wet fly. My son hooked a real toad that broke him off

For how close the stream is to me; I should probably spend a little more time getting to know it.

Nice evening all in all and it was good to get out with my son and enjoy the world a bit.

My Apologies Dr. Albatross. In the interest of Transparency - I got my first fish on a mop fly last night. This fly was given to me by Albatross recently and the Whip Finish was suspect. 🙂

Buffalo Delayed Harvest section is a lot of fun. There is soooo many places for fish to hide and I typically do very well there. I have seen some small bug activity and have seen and caught a bunch of rising fish too.

TIME FISHED: 1:00 to 4:00

AIR TEMP : 60 give or take a few depending on cloud cover
Partly cloudy with a light shower from time to time
WATER TEMP: Upper 40's

WATER LEVELS: Very nice with good flow and easily wadable

FISH CAUGHT: Landed 3. 2 rainbows and a brownie. All stocked fish.
Lost a couple more.

FLIES USED: Wooly buggers and Hares Ear nymph

INSECTS SEEN: A few caddis and some midges

Since I just lost Mom late last year, I didn't want to sit around the house on MOther's Day, so I jaunted up to fish this water. I grew up near this area and used to fish the stream ALOT near Boggsville, but never up this far.

I was impressed to see the number of stream improvement devices on the water along both Nichola Road and Fenelton Road from the Arrowhead chapter of TU. Looks like they've been there for quite a few years.

Overall, the water provides good cover/habitat in some stretches. However, there is also a lot of scoured streambed from heavy flows in many other sections. Without the improvement devices, much of the water would be void of cover. Also, The banks are largely mud/clay. The streambed itself seems to alternate between sections of mud bottom and rocky-firm bottom stretches.

I have heard that the temps hold here fairly well throughout the summer unless the weather is very hot and dry.

I really wish I saw more bug life. But if you're a streamer guy (this IS Keystone Select water -- you could probably do well here.

My advice to anyone fishing Buffalo Creek DHALO. If you happen to run into a guy who is toting a steelhead size net. Stop and talk to him for a few minutes. If you play your cards right he might offer to show you some pictures on his phone.
