Brookie Streams, Westmoreland and Somerset Counties, 6/30

Wet spring and early summer are paying dividends on mountain streams. Fished a number of "cricks" in Forbes State Forest. All had great flows. Fishing was excellent, quit counting after 15, easily 30 to 40 brookies and browns. Most wild. A couple stocked. Caught most on top with a #14-#16 elk hair caddis/hopper/Stimulator flies. Also fished a small section of Laurel Hill where a cold trib enters and caught a couple stocked bows on an iso nymph. Nothing of real size... a 13" rainbow. Nice 10" native. Tons of 3 to 8 inchers. Saw just one other fisherman all day. All in all, a fantastic day. Get out there before the water shrinks.

The rain has been holding up its end of the bargain but the temps this weekend and this coming week will probably lock everything down. My buddy, a big fisherman, is coming home from Afghanistan in the next week and I wanted to get him out there. Oh well, off to the lakes for some bass/pike....
